Cory Gunz arrested on gun charges

YMCMB member Cory Gunz was arrested in the Bronx yesterday afternoon for possession of a loaded firearm. Cory's father Peter Gunz spoke with MTV today and confirmed the arrest.

"The details are still sketchy, but I can confirm that he was arrested with a firearm yesterday in the Bronx. They caught him around 2p.m. in the afternoon with a loaded gun in his knapsack. It was definitely an illegal search."

"I spoke to the arresting officer, and so far, what I'm hearing from him is that they got a phone call at the station saying they should 'look out". According to [the officer], they didn't know he was Cory Gunz. They just saw a bunch of kids following him around. What I will say is that the officer that arrested Cory, actually happened to be a cool dude. After arresting Cory, sitting down with him and talking, he felt bad about the situation."

"At the end of the day, there's a reason for everything, but at the same time, in New York, it's mandatory jail time. To go to a precinct and see your son, your junior, in handcuffs, it's heartbreaking. Anytime you see your child in jail, in the cell, in handcuffs, it's very hard. He's walked down some of the same paths that I walked down, but you never want to see your kids go through what you went through. This is Cory's first offense, but sometimes they like to make an example out of rappers and people with any kind of celebrity to them."

Spate: What's going on Dow Timo?

Dow Timo: Just grinding, turning these dreams into reality.

Spate: Before we get started tell us where you got your name.

Dow Timo: Dow Timo . Dow's my nickname from the streets and Timo's the first half of my gov- last name.

Spate: Now you're from Spring Valley, NY- What's up w/ the hip hop scene up there?

Dow Timo: There's a heavy hip hop scene over here, just like any place else. It's almost like a bucket of crabs tryna climb out and get seen.

Spate: How would you describe your style of music?

Dow Timo: I make music for the "FleetLife" (People who love to drink, party, get fly and get money) If that's you then come get with it.

Spate: Do you feel like where you're from has an impact on the music you create?

Dow Timo: It's definitely a crucial ingredient; If I'm rhyming about "my reality" who I am and where I'm from has to be felt.

Spate: What else do you do outside of music?

Dow Timo: I'm in the works of starting a web series called Fleetlife Tv to let my fans build with me on a different level.

Spate: Do you feel that it's important for indie artists to have a financial back up plan?

Dow Timo: Absolutely, that's with anything in life. Nothing is gaurneteed.

Spate: How long have you been in the game?

Dow Timo: I've been in the game professionally for about a year and change.

Spate: Is music something you see yourself doing long term?

Dow Timo: I'm here to stay, so bring a pillow [laughing].

Spate: With the various styles of music changing like the seasons, do you feel like your music is something that will continue to evolve with the changing tides?

Dow Timo: My music has been evolving since the first moment I blessed the mic. I can hear the difference from now and then.

Spate: Do you think it's important for artists to continuiously revamp the lyrical styles?

Dow Timo: Yes, It's good to stick to your own style, but the element of surprise is always a game changer. Lyrical evolution is a must.

Spate: What current projects are you working on?

Dow Timo: Right now I'm working on Fleetlife Tv , and The Fleetlife mixtape.

Spate: What should people expect from your projects?

Dow Timo: In one word versatility, I make music for everyone.

Spate: Do you have expectations of your music affecting the future of hip hop?

Dow Timo: Yes of course, I don't think there's any artist doing this seriously who doesn't hope their music leaves an imprint.

Spate: What are your views on how some of these major labels are treating the independent artist now- a- days?

Dow Timo: I feel their only major advantage is financial. If indies had the bank of majors there would be no competition.

Diddy negotiating television network deal

Sean Combs, the entertainment impresario known as Diddy, is planning to launch a music-themed cable network, according to three sources with knowledge of his plans. The channel is called Revolt and is aiming to launch at the end of the year--12/12/12, to be specific.

Sources with knowledge of the Revolt playbook describe it as a music and music news channel with an urban skew. One described it as the old days of MTV, but for more of the African American audience. The venture is well funded, say the sources.

Former MTV programming chief Andy Schuon is involved with Revolt, according to sources. In 2006, Schuon headed up a music channel called International Music Feed (IMF), which was acquired by Ovation TV before being discontinued.

Comcast will provide distribution as part of its commitment to the FCC to help launch minority owned networks. In April, Comcast began soliciting proposals for "independent channels," according to its press materials. It plans to launch 10 over the next eight years, including eight Hispanic or African American owned channels, and began accepting proposals for the first three last spring.

Each of the 10 will be added to "select Comcast systems as part of the D1 digital tier," said Comcast; one source believed there would be around 10 million Comcast homes on board at Revolt's launch. Comcast announced its plans to launch an "American Latino"-operated channel by July 28, and an African American-owned one by January of 2013, which would fit Diddy's 12/12 timeframe.

A Comcast rep would not confirm Diddy's involvement, saying no announcements had been made on which among the "well over 100" proposals are getting the green light. The rep said discussions with the proposals' principals are ongoing, and that Comcast hoped to have an announcement soon.

A source said Time Warner Cable (TWC) will also be involved in Revolt distribution, which the source noted would mean around 18 million households, between Comcast and TWC.

A TWC spokesperson said the subscription TV operator has had "some discussions" regarding Revolt and Diddy, but did not have a comment at this time.

Diddy's Bad Boy Entertainment headquarters in New York did not respond to calls.

Diddy has had a variety of monikers throughout his successful career as a performer, producer and entrepreneur.

It's a banner time for networks targeting African Americans. The multicast network Bounce TV launched in September, while Kin TV and Soul of the South are aiming to debut in the spring.

B&C reported Jan. 19 that Charles Barkley is a co-founder at Kin TV.

James Brown, of CBS Sports, was recently named managing director at fledgling cable net Black Heritage Network.

XXL pays tribute to Biggie with new cover

The XXL team spoke to some of those closest to Big for an in-depth look into his life and death. From his kids T’Yanna and Christopher “CJ” Wallace and their mamas, Jan Jackson and Faith Evans, to his closest friends like members of Junior M.A.F.I.A. and others, many got their chance to share stories and more to pay homage to the beloved MC. Most even disclosed rare, never-before-published photos of Biggie from their personal collections, which are featured in this month’s issue. Since Big was one of the most swagger-jacked rappers of all time, there’s a list of the 100 best Biggie bites, a look a what The Notorious One might have looked like at 40-plus, and much more.

George Lucas puts up 60 million for Red tails Movie but will you support it?

Do you plan to see Red Tails this weekend? If not, you should.. And Here’s why!

It took George Lucas 23 years to get ‘Red Tails’ — the story of the Tuskegee Airmen, the first all black aerial combat unit during World War II — produced and in theaters. The film, which Lucas calls his passion project, included not only an all black cast, but black screenwriters, a black director, and a black film scorer, something that he says Hollywood was not trying to support or finance. Many thought that this movie would never see the light of day, but with an all star cast including Cuba Gooding Jr., Terrence Howard, Tristan Wilds, Ne-Yo, Method Man, David Oyelowo, Ryan Early, and Kevin Phillips, we finally have the first blockbuster all black action movie that not only brings drama but drops knowledge about an important part of history.

There is already a prequel and sequel to the film in the works, however, those movies will never be released if people do not go out to the theaters this weekend and prove to Hollywood that there is still a market for black films. George Lucas revealed on The Daily Show recently that he had to finance the film himself and that even with his track record of franchises like Star Wars and Indiana Jones, the movie industry wasn’t convinced that an action movie with an ‘all black cast’ would do well.

“[The studios] said [Red Tails is] not green enough. It’s because it’s an all black movie. There’s no major White roles in it at all. It’s one of the first all-Black action pictures ever made. It’s a reasonably expensive movie. Normally, Black movies—Tyler Perry movies or something—they’re very low-budget,” George said. “This cost more than what those movies make, so they figure…They don’t believe there’s any foreign market for it.”

George also revealed that he put up $60 million of his own money for the film (which had a $93 million dollar budget) because he felt it was an inspirational story for teenage boys.

I wanted to make an inspirational for teenage boys. I wanted to show that they have heroes. They’re real American heroes. They’re patriots that helped make the country what it is today. It’s not Glory where you have a lot of White officers running these guys into cannon fire.”

Meanwhile, Tyler Perry, who has been heavily criticized for his ‘stereotypical’ films over the years, encouraged his following to go out and support the film because ‘black films’ are becoming extinct. He posted on his website:

Unfortunately, movies starring an all African American cast are on the verge of becoming extinct. THAT’S RIGHT, EXTINCT! Ask any executive at a Hollywood Studio why, and most of them will tell you one of two things. The first thing they’ll say is that DVD sales have become very soft, so it’s hard for a movie with an all black cast to break-even. Secondly they’ll say, most movies are now dependent on foreign sales to be successful and most “black” movies don’t sell well in foreign markets. So what that means is you will begin to see less and less films that star an all black cast. Isn’t that sad in a 2012 America? Somewhere along the way we still haven’t realized that we are more alike then not.

George decided to take a huge risk by entirely funding the movie and releasing it himself. What a guy! For him to believe so strongly in this story is amazing. I think we should pull together and get behind this movie. I really do! Not just African Americans, but all of us

Rocawear -- the hip-hop clothing brand founded in 1999 by rapper entrepreneurs Shawn "Jay-Z" Carter and Damon Dash -- laid off half the staff of its men's and boys apparel division on Jan. 6, one day before Jay-Z's wife, Beyoncé Knowles, gave birth to the couple's baby girl. Rocawear's New York headquarters -- a 40,000-square-foot facility at 1411 Broadway where Jay-Z took an office in 2009 -- fired 28 of its 56 workers for "economic" reasons, according to documents filed with the New York State Department of Labor. Jay-Z, formerly a "big presence" in the office, rarely shows up anymore, an insider told The Post. "It's kind of like he's given up on the brand," the source added. (New York Post)

Jimmy Iovine talks split with Monster cable with the Beats By Dre brand

Interscope Records CEO Jimmy Iovine has stepped forward to clear the air on reports claiming popular Beats By Dre headphones line has parted ways with longtime manufacturer Monster Cable.

Confirming the hype is real, Iovine said Dr. Dre's successful line is only focused on getting better.

"You're only as good as your weakest link in the ecosystem of sound, of audio," Iovine told Billboard.biz shortly after touching down at LAX on Friday. "In the music industry, we have lost an entire generation to bad sound...We want PC makers to have better audio, because these things are used as home stereos by a lot of people and that makes it suck." Iovine says there's no bad blood between Beats and Monster, and in fact just saw Monster CEO Noel Lee in Vegas Thursday night. "It was cool, it was social," Iovine said. "We had a few business things that you have when you work with a guy for five years. But we've grown so fast we have to be nimble, to control our own destiny. It was always structured that way." They say your first child changes you in ways you wouldn't believe, which rings true for Jay-Z, who's vowed to retire "b*tch" from his vocabulary.

In a gift to his newborn daughter Jay penned a poem explaining to her why he would never use the word again, declaring "degradation has passed." He also changed the lyrics to his hit single "I Got 99 problems, but a b*tch ain't one," to "lady."

Iggy Azalea talks new music and dating A$AP Rocky

People say it's generally bad luck to get your lover's name tattooed on your body because break ups happen frequently and you end up having to cover it up or have it removed. Iggy Azalea doesn't seem worried after getting A$AP Rocky's name tatted on her fingers.

What was supposed to be a musical collaboration between the beauty from Australia and Harlem's A$AP has ended up turning into much more for the two fast rising rap stars. Iggy recently spoke with Vibe about how the two became more than friends, her upcoming projects and what she thinks of Azealia Banks.

VIBE: Okay, so we have to talk about the A$AP tattoo. What’s the story behind that?
Iggy: Ugh, it’s hard to say without getting myself in trouble. [Laughs]

Say as much as you can.
I don’t know how to put it. It’s like… I… I don’t know… I love him and that’s all there is to it. We have our own thing going on and I’m not the only one that [got the tattoos]. I’ll tell you that. [Laughs] I’m just the only one with it on my fingers!

Now, is it that you love the movement or is there something going on between you and A$AP Rocky.
It’s not the movement. I’ll tell you that.

Okay, so saying as much as you can, if someone wanted to approach you for a date or something serious, would you be able to say “yes” or “no”?
I’d have to say that I’m taken.

Nice. Okay. When did you first meet the A$AP mob?
We have a mutual friend, Chase N. Cashe. He kinda showed me their stuff and he showed them mine. I came out to New York for the CMJ festival, and I couldn’t make their shows, but I got some of their numbers and was like, ‘When you’re out in LA and you do a show, I’ll come support.’ They ended up coming out a few weeks later, and Chase introduced us all. I was supposed to be doing a song with Rocky but… [Laughs]

I guess there was more than just a song there, huh?
[Laughs] Something was happening. There was definitely some chemistry. I mean, we would do a song, but with everything that’s kind of going on, I think it would be kinda corny right now. Like, 'Rocky and Iggy do a love duet!' [Laughs]

Aw! That’s the classic, unconventional love story.
It’s funny to me that everybody is so surprised about it. This should show you as a public how much you don’t see behind closed doors. Artists still do have personal lives. It feels like everything is so exposed and everybody knows everything, but there’s a lot of stuff that’s still private. It just came as a surprise like, 'What the f*ck,' but you guys just don’t know. [Laughs]

Yeah. I mean, people have a hard time separating real life from celebrity, so once they get a glimpse of that real life, they bug out.
And it’s scary! It’s scares me! I see how people twist regular music stuff, and I’m like, I don’t know about personal life. It’s like, you want to tell everyone about all kinds of different stuff, but I don’t want to ruin it by letting everybody in because not everybody’s happy for you.

Exactly.
I always say: Share your happiness with the world, give other people that happienes and let it come back, but some things make me question it. I don’t know if I want some people to know that I am happy. I think a lot of people want to take it away from you and that’s really scary.

Are you frightened by your growing success?
Sorta. It’s weird. It’s like you’re scared about it ‘cause you see a lot of things snowballing that you don’t have control over and youre’ like ‘Whoa.’ And then, you’ll get scared that you’ll lose it too or that it won’t keep going. What if I fail? What I go back to regular [life]? What if I fall off? It’s like I’m scared to see what’s over the mountain, but I have a wolf chasing me and I have to keep going. I have to keep going.

A double-edged sword.
Yeah, for real. When I first put my first video out, I sat down with my friend at this café, and we’re like, ‘Holy sh*t, what did we just do?’ [Laughs] You just can’t be prepated for the criticism. When you’re in the industry, you get critiqued a lot, but when you see real strangers going in on you, you’re like, I’m not prepared for it at all. It’s hard not to be affected by it. When you first get exposed, you want to look [at the comments], but you have to train yourself. You know what I mean?

Do not look at your mentions!
Yeah, even with me and Rocky. ‘Is Rocky dating Iggy?’ It’s like, I don’t even want to see the comments on that. Or I’ll see, ‘No, Iggy’s not dating him. Iggy’s dating blah, blah.’ [Laughs] It’s like, whatever! Wrong, wrong, wrong!

You know, one thing that everyone is speaking up about also is you and Azealia Banks. What’s going on there?

I have no deal with her. I don’t know her personally. I said it about Kreyshawn, too. If I don’t know you personally, how could I have a problem with you? What would I have a problem about? I don’t know that person. If somebody wants to say something about me, that’s something I can’t control. But a stranger? Whether it’s an artist or just a person writing a comment, you could never say anything that could make me mad enough to feel like I have some personal problem with you. I don’t know you. I truly don’t understand it. I just keep making my own music, and I’m deaf to that. What is there to say? Nothing.

What's coming up next?
I'm doing a song with Yelawolf. I have a song with Dev coming out, and this is all going to be promotional songs before the album. I have a song with Skeme and Kendrick [Lamar] that we're putting out, and I'm trying to get a song with just me and Kendrick, like, really freestyling and stuff.

Odd Future cartoon to premiere on Adult Swim

Cartoon Network announced via press release that Odd Future's live-action sketch show, "Loiter Squad", will hit the airwaves this March as part of their late-night Adult Swim.
The 15-minute show all feature "sketches, man on the street segments, pranks and music from Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All. The cast, featuring the Los Angeles collective of rappers, artists, and skateboarders, channel their multi-faceted creative talents in this off-the-wall showcase."

Viewers can expect to see most of the OFWGKTA crew including Tyler, The Creator, Left Brain, Hodgy Beats, Domo Genesis, The Internet, The Jet Age of Tomorrow, Mike G and Frank Ocean.
The network first broke the news of the collaboration last September.
"Loiter Squad is being produced by Dickhouse Entertainment—the Hollywood production partnership of Johnny Knoxville, Jeff Tremaine and Spike Jonze who have been the creative power behind hits including Jackass, Nitro Circus, Rob & Big, Rob Dyrdek's Fantasy Factory and Wildboyz."

Azealia Banks interview with The Hundreds Magazine talks Nicki Minaj and more

Azealia Banks is making a lot of noise in a very short amount of time. The Harlem-bred emcee has been endorsed by Kanye West, who reportedly wants to sign her to his G.O.O.D Music imprint. Gwyneth Paltrow and Kelly Rowland are also said to be fans of the 20-year old's music video "212".

She ranks 3rd on BBC's Sound of 2012 list right behind Frank Ocean as an artist to watch for in 2012 and is booked to play this year's Coachella Festival.

Things are obviously looking up for Azealia, who is as outspoken as she is talented.

When we first featured a story about the LaGuardia High School of Performing Arts graduate in Manhattan, the same school Nicki Minaj attended, she had just finished going in on Kreayshawn via Twitter.

In an interview she did for The Hundreds Magazine: Music Edition, Vol. 3 Issue 2, she goes in on Kreayshawn again and has some not so kind words for Nicki.

Check out what she had to say below.

On Kreayshawn:
"As much as Kreayshawn would love to be considered part of this 'rap game,' she's not. I guess a part of me is kind of annoyed that those white girls are making these songs, and it's like if these girls were black and making the same songs would you be that interested?"

On Nicki Minaj:
"The butt, the hair, the this, the that, all the other sh*t, like... As much respect that I have for her, we've seen you do this already, what else can you do?"

She also talked to BBC about her first record deal signed when she was 16 with XL Recordings. Home to artists such as M.I.A., Radiohead, Beck and Tyler, The Creator. Things didn't exactly go well during her time there and she wound up having a falling out with the company's president Richard Russell.

"It was almost the day I signed to XL that they started checking out," she says. "There were a good seven to eight months where I was just sending them texts and no-one would say anything or pick up the phone or respond to my emails. Nothing. And it started to ruin me. So I started harassing Richard. Like, 'Dude, I'm going to chop your neck off. Answer my emails!'"

When Russell finally got back to her, his response to "212" was not what she expected so she bailed.

"So I was like, this is not what I worked so hard my entire life to do - to be rejected by some English guy in West Bumblefrickin' nowhere London, telling me I'm amateur or something like that. So I just said, 'Screw you!'"

Action Bronson-One year ago no one knew his name, now legends are calling him the next big thing. Being placed on the top hip hop sites daily boosted Action Bronson to star in a short period of time.

Chris Webby- Chris used his huge Internet presence combined with consistent college tours to build his astronomical buzz. He also got a nomination for XXL freshman along with Action Bronson.

Sha Stimuli- Sha Stimuli is still using the Internet to reach his fans. Sha released a book in 2011 and also has a popular relationship radio show. He also blogs daily about life and more. Content with his place in hip hop Sha has big plans for the future.

Mac Miller- He made history selling over 100,000 first week as an independent in 2011. We are interested in seeing if he can accomplish something big in 2012.
