Naomi Campbell says she is not Chocolate

Naomi Campbell is considering "every option available," including a lawsuit, after Cadbury used her name to promote its new Bliss chocolate bar, the Independent UK reports.

The advertisement reads, "Move over Naomi, there's a new diva in town," with an image of the candy posed on a mound of diamonds. According to the Independent, Campbell said, "I am shocked. It's upsetting to be described as chocolate, not just for me, but for all black women and black people. I do not find any humour in this. It is insulting and hurtful." Her mother, Valerie Morris, explained, "I'm deeply upset by this racist advert. Do these people think they can insult black people and we just take it? This is the 21st century, not the 1950s. Shame on Cadbury."

The Daily Mail writes that black rights groups have backed Campbell's cause. Simon Woolley of the UK's Operation Black Vote, called for a boycott of the brand's products, adding, "Racism in the playground starts with black children being called 'chocolate bar.'" He has also contacted both Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson.

A spokesperson for Kraft Foods, which owns Cadbury, told the Mail that all billboards featuring the ad have been taken down, adding, "It was certainly never our intention to cause any offense and the campaign itself is a light-hearted take on the social pretensions of Cadbury Dairy Milk Bliss."

The ad she says is offensive

The Spotlight: Big Bembeano reps Cali heavy

When I heard about Big Bembeano, I was very interested in his story. He was incarcerated for many years for crimes that were committed when he was young gang banger. Its hard for kids growing up without a father figure in the hood especially when you have so much violence and pain so I was able to relate to his story in a major way. Big Bembeano is a hip hop artist from California and he is ready to bring his music to a major scale. He has made a pledge to change his life and focus on music and I really think he should be celebrated for taking his life in a new direction. He wants to be considered one of the greats and he is willing to put that work in.

People are genuinely interesting in hearing about real life struggles so I definitely think that millions of people will identify with the Big Bembeano movement. We have a clip of an interview he did on the radio. Take a listen to his story and music.

Clive Davis giving 5 million to expand music program at NYU

The music executive Clive Davis is giving an additional $5 million gift to the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University, allowing the expansion of the Clive Davis Department of Recorded Music into the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music, school officials announced Tuesday. The gift will make it possible for the school to recruit additional working professionals as faculty members, establish a generous scholarship fund, facilitate the recruitment of young talent from around the world and increase the number of students, university officials said in a statement. Two new programs will be created to bring in talented high school students. Future Music Moguls will be a free program for students in the New York City area, and the Summer High School Programs in Recorded Music will be open to students everywhere.

With a $5 million gift from Mr. Davis in 2003, the Clive Davis Department of Recorded Music opened its doors. Its curriculum was designed to provide professional training for students seeking work in the music industry as creative entrepreneurs, with courses like “The History of Def Jam” and “Branding.” Twenty-eight students enrolled in the department when it opened, Richard Pierce, a spokesman for New York University said Tuesday. The expansion into an institute will allow the program to accept about 80 students, he said.

“The economy is in a downturn, and the music industry has always been one where you jump in by doing,” Mr. Pierce said. “We have seen this increase in the last few years where people who want to get into the music business first want to get an education. This is new for the music business and a big reason Mr. Davis gave the additional $5 million to expand the program.”

Mr. Davis, who graduated from N.Y.U. in 1953, has had a storied history in the music world. He has been president of Columbia Records and held top positions at Arista, J Records, BMG U.S. Label Group and was most recently the chief creative officer of Sony BMG. Bruce Springsteen, Jennifer Hudson, Billy Joel, Alicia Keys, Janis Joplin, Blood Sweat and Tears, Santana and Whitney Houston are among the artists he signed and helped develop. Mr. Davis has won four Grammy awards for producing albums and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001.
