India makes $35 dollar iPad?

The technology whizzes in India have come up with a new, low-cost tech toy: a $35 computer that looks like an iPad.

As this AP story notes, India is already known for its ability to crank out cheap products and services -- like the $2,127 Nano car or open-heart surgery for just $2,000.

Now comes along India's new Linux operating-based system computer. It's a tablet that lets you do word processing functions, video conferencing and even web surfing.

If India's government can find a manufacturer for this ultra cheap computer, it hopes to bring it to market in 2011 and target students as primary buyers.

Ciara when I was 17 on MTV

MTV's 'When I Was 17' series has finally made it's way around to Ciara. It won't come as any surprise that by the time she was 17, Ciara was very driven, but also very well liked at her high school. As her friend Jasper describes her, "When Ciara was 17 she was just real ambitious, just happy all the time. Sing and dance [he repeated that several times] that's all she do." She was a cheerleader, which isn't hard to imagine, but she had to make a decision to either get serious about her music career or continue as a cheerleader. So she decided to pursue music full time. From there, you know what happened. She worked her butt off and became a big star with hits like Goodies and 1,2 step. Ciara is about to release her fourth album titled 'Basic Instinct' in August.

Queen Latifah on life and a few other things

(Essence)

n a candid interview, Grammy-winning recording artist, and Oscar nominated actress, Queen Latifah sat down with Larry King last night, to discuss her new book and a variety of other hot topics. Here is what she said.

On her new book, "Put on Your Crown":
"I feel like every woman is a queen and we should be treated as such. Putting on your crown is really accepting the fact that you are a queen. You are a great woman, so wherever you are in life, just keep on on that path."

On female MC's:
"The call is on for more female rappers in hip-hop."

On turning 40:
"Turning a new age never freaked me out. I don't put time limits on when I have to do things, because life is change. What happens on your path is what happens while you are going there. It is how you feel inside and how you live your life; so 40 is good."

On Tiger Woods:
"We need to leave Tiger alone. I think anybody is capable of overcoming challenges with the right things in their life. Number one, I think God can do all things so if people pray, it means something. I think he can overcome whatever challenges he faces. I think underneath all that, he lost himself in this."

On her mother:
"My mom is my best friend. She spent a lot of time with my brother and me. She encouraged us to do so much. When no one else can calm me down, my mother can. My mom raised me to be a queen."

On motherhood:
"I am planning on having kids."

On her personal life:
"What happens in my personal life is my personal business."

On prejudice in America:
"When the cab doesn't stop for me and it stops for the White guy, that's prejudice- that's racism. It's hurtful, it drives you nuts, but you don't let it break you. You know, we are strong resilient people. We are not going to let something break us. We just bounce back. We find a way.

Another Forrest Whitaker movie goes straight to dvd

Although he had leading roles in 'Repo Man' and 'Our Family Wedding,' Oscar winner Forest Whitaker has had more films go straight to home video in recent times

His latest film, 'The Experiment,' will arrive on Blu-ray and DVD on Sept. 21 through Sony Pictures.

Since the Texas native won the Academy Award for best actor in 2006 for his role in 'The Last King of Scotland,' five of his films have either been released in limited theaters or gone straight to DVD, including 'Winged Creatures' with Jennifer Hudson, 'Powder Blue' with Sanaa Lathan, and most recently, 'Hurricane Season' with Taraji P. Henson.

Directed by Paul Scheuring, 'The Experiment' stars Whitaker with Oscar winner Adrien Brody, Cam Gigandet, Clifton Collins Jr. and Maggie Grace in a remake of the 2001 German psychological thriller 'Das Experiment.'

The story is based on the infamous Stanford Prison Experiment, in which 24 men were pushed to the brink of madness when an experiment simulating life within a state prison spins horribly out of control.

Selected to participate in a two-week research project, a group of men agree to play inmates and guards in a simulation. But as the 24 volunteers slip deeper into their roles, power corrupts, fears escalate and the experiment spins horribly out of control.

Brody's latest film, 'Predators,' grossed more than $25 million this past weekend.

The high-profiled films that featured Whitaker were 'The Great Debaters' with Denzel Washington, 'Vantage Point' with Dennis Quaid, 2009's 'Where the Wild Things Are' with James Gandolfini, 2010's 'Repo Man' and 'Our Family Wedding.'

The last two films received negative reviews from critics.

Nelly hosts Applebottom's fashion show with Macy's

Rap star Nelly hosted a fashion show for his latest Apple Bottoms Fall/Winter collection at Fashion Show Mall in Las Vegas on July 10, 2010. Fans and spectators were able to experience a live runway show along with the chance to receive Nelly's autograph and be photographed with the star. The show benefited African American Bone Marrow Awareness month. Nelly continues to show support for leukemia victims after the death of his sister, Jacqueline Donahue, who passed away from the disease in 2005. Since then, he has created the foundation Jes Us 4 Jackie in her honor and in an effort to match bone marrow transplant patients with donors.

Even though Nelly isn't necessarily making music, he is certainly making a difference by shedding light on less fortunate individuals through fashion. He even did his usually good deed by shedding light on cancer survivor Valerie Cruz, 18, from the Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation, by having her model his line. Cruz strutted her stuff down the catwalk with confidence and appreciation for all of Nelly's support.
Apple Bottoms has made must-have jeans for any female with an "apple bottom" and even for those without. The entire inspiration behind the collection began with a model search for women with nicely shaped rear ends. To many, this may sound demeaning, but Nelly will surely be the apple to someone's eyes through his great humanitarian efforts.

New Miami Heat hip hop song emerges with Flo-rida and more

The news of Lebron James moving down to Miami has caused quite a stir of emotions; despair, excitement and jealousy could describe fans nationwide after hearing the news. And while DJ Khaled's "All I Do Is Win" seemed to be the perfect soundtrack for this new super-team establishing for the Miami Heat, Flo Rida just couldn't leave well enough alone. Featuring verses from Billy Blue, Brisco, Brainna, Ballgreezy and Picalo, Flo Rida attempts to give Miami a summer anthem that evokes pride in their city and, in this case, their basketball team by claiming NBA victory for the Miami Heat with a track entitled "We Already Won (Miami Heat)". While the many features make one think of a 2010 version for Trick Daddy & the Slip-N-Slide All Star's "Take It 2 Da House", it's just not that awesome.

The Dream and Christina Milian are over wow that was fast

Christina Milian and The-Dream have decided to separate, his rep confirms to UsMagazine.com.

"Terius ‘The-Dream’ Nash is saddened to announce that his marriage to Christina Milian was unsuccessful. The couple reached this decision in late 2009, but decided to keep the news private in efforts to protect their baby daughter Violet. They ask for consideration and respect for their family moving forward,” his rep tells Us.

The split confirmation comes as racy photos surface of The-Dream and his assistant of about a year, Melissa Santiago, frolicking in the Caribbean.

The producer and singer (who released his third album, Love King, on June 29), 32, proposed to Milian, 28, in July 2009 with a six-carat diamond ring from Ivanka Trump’s jewelry line. The couple eloped last September in Las Vegas, and said “I Do” a second time in Rome in December. They welcomed daughter Violet five months ago.

Jesse Jackson refers to Lebron James as a runaway slave

(Blackvoices)
Rev. Jesse Jackson caused a stir this week by jumping into the public tirade of Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert against NBA star LeBron James. In very public comments this week, Gilbert chastised James for deciding to leave Cleveland to play for the Miami Heat. He defined James as a traitor and someone that we should not want our children to be like.

Apparently Jackson decided that he'd had enough. In a public statement of his own, he said the following:

"He speaks as an owner of LeBron and not the owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers. His feelings of betrayal personify a slave master mentality. He sees LeBron as a runaway slave."

It was only a matter of time before someone made reference to the racial writing on the wall. With LeBron being an African American athlete and one of the most celebrated public figures in America today, many expected his decision to lead to a public uproar. What was not expected, however, was the decay in James' public image that resulted from his move. He was not only criticized for leaving the fans who'd been so loyal to him over the past seven years, but was also described as a narcissist for making his decision on a nationally televised special.

Most of the criticism is uncalled for, but it won't matter. At this point, James has paid a huge price for his freedom, and the only way to truly redeem himself would be to win a championship. One can argue, however, that the championship pressure was going to be high no matter where he decided to play. The difference is that by coming to Miami, he's got a good chance to win his title. Through the years, most NBA fans have been astonished that James could make a mediocre team so stellar, and this is why everyone wants him. In fact, as the comedian Katt Williams might agree: The fact that LeBron James has so many haters is what reminds us that his impact is undeniable.

Let's be clear: LeBron James is one of the most effective team players in NBA history. What you saw in Cleveland is just the beginning, because he now has real talent next to him. The thing that impressed me the most about LeBron when I first watched him as a teenager was that he always stood out, no matter who he's playing with. In the McDonald's All-Star Game, he controlled the floor unlike any player I'd ever seen, even though these were allegedly the best high school prospects in the nation. At the same time, when he played with his underwhelming high school classmates, he elevated them to national contenders. Love him or hate him, LeBron is special, and this dramatic situation is just another chapter in what will amount to a very interesting life story. It is only appropriate that at some point Jesse Jackson be brought into the mix.

Martin Lawrence gets married for the second time

(Blackvoices)

Comedian Martin Lawrence married his longtime girlfriend, Shamicka Gibbs, at his home in Beverly Hills on Saturday.

The Hollywood funnyman, 45, and Gibbs, 35, already have two daughters: Amara, 9, and Iyana, 7, both of whom were flower girls during the ceremony.

The private nuptials were for 120 guests, and R&B singer Shanice serenaded the couple.

Celebrity pals like Eddie Murphy, Denzel Washington and Michael Strahan were apparently among the attendees.

The wedding was planned by Diann Valentine, who also oversaw theShamika & Martin nuptials of rapper Nas to singer Kelis, and R&B star Usher, among others.

Lawrence was previously married to former Miss Virginia Patricia Southall. The couple divorced in 1996 and have a daughter, Jasmine, 14, who also participated in the ceremony.

Former NBA basketball player Melvin Turner commits suicide

(Blackvoices)
Former University of Kentucky standout Melvin Turpin was found this week in his home dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The coroner's report confirmed that Turner committed suicide but released no further details.

Turpin was a star for the Kentucky basketball team from 1980 to 1984. The team was heavily favored to win the national championship in 1984, but had it taken in an upset by Georgetown University and Patrick Ewing. The 6-foot-11 Turpin led the team to three straight SEC titles. He also holds the record for the most field goals made in SEC tournament play.

Turpin spent five seasons in the NBA but never turned out to be as good as the rest of the graduating class in the 1984 draft, in which he was the sixth pick behind future greats like Akeem Olajuwan, Michael Jordan and Charles Barkley.

Many are wondering what led Turpin to commit suicide. I was born and raised in Kentucky and went to school at the University of Kentucky. I remember Turpin being a star when I was growing up, but I never met him. Some wonder if he, like some other professional athletes, had trouble adjusting to life after the NBA, when the cheering has stopped and you're no longer the hero you once were. Turpin was a security guard when he died, and his longtime friend, former Kentucky star Dirk Minniefield, said that he felt it difficult to return to his hometown as a regular working guy when others expected him to have a life of riches and NBA fame.

"As an athlete you feel like you have to tell people about a job that they think is below you. Turp would say, 'Why do I feel like I have to explain parts of my life that you feel are unacceptable to you?' That's how it would come across," said Minniefield.

What's saddest about the death of Melvin Turpin is that it leaves me to wonder how well he was educated. His death is the second major tragedy this year involving a University of Kentucky basketball player, starting with the arrest of former Kentucky great Antoine Walker on very serious gambling charges. When I was a student at Kentucky, it was a common perception among the student body that athletes were not getting the academic attention they deserved.

While we can't say for sure that Turpin was or was not educated well when he was at Kentucky, the fact that he came back to a "stellar" career as a security guard seems to imply that his college education hardly prepared him for a life of anything other than basketball. Turpin certainly deserves some of this responsibility, but as someone who attended and taught at the University of Kentucky in the past, it is my presumption that Turpin was probably not forced to study as hard as he was forced to practice. In fact, Kentucky recently hired coach John Calipari, who is known for having numerous NCAA violations, along with a horrifically bad graduation rate. This year, the GPA of Kentucky's basketball team was an abysmal 2.025, which is the lowest among any of U. Kentucky's athletics teams and also the worst among the 20 athletics programs that reported their grades to the Lexington Herald Leader Newspaper in response to their request.

Such terrible academic performance on the basketball team is nothing new at Kentucky, and was likely even worse during the era of Melvin Turpin, when the program nearly received the NCAA death penalty because it had so many recruiting violations. I find is amazing and ironic that a place that allegedly proclaims itself to be an academic institution can always find a way to make sure players come to practice every day, but then claim that they are unable to control how much they study. Additionally, the choice of an academic institution to hire a coach who has clearly communicated that academics are not his top priority is yet another reminder that many of these universities only care about using these kids for money. Perhaps if Turpin had received merely a fraction of the millions he earned for the university as a player, he might have had a more fulfilling existence. My condolences go out to his family. May Melvin Turpin rest in peace.

Brooklyn News: Man 26 murdered in hail of bullets

A 26-year-old man died in a hail of bullets on a Brooklyn street, police and witnesses said.

Michael Jones was cut down on North Oxford Walk near Park Ave. at the Walt Whitman Houses in Fort Greene about 11:50 a.m., cops said.

"I was out here sweeping some leaves and I heard the gunshots," said Judy Jones, 64, who is not related to the victim.

The witness, who lives nearby, said she heard about a dozen shots that sounded like they were fired from an automatic weapon.

"I looked over after the shots and there were two men standing over him, each holding a gun," she said. "It was awful."

Michael Jones died at the scene. Investigators were still searching for a motive last night. No arrests have been made.

In 2010 where is hip hop going?

As we take a look at the artists that are hot right now we can see a big change from the past. Most of the rappers on the top of the iTunes charts either sing or have some sort of singing on it. From Drake, B.O.B, Nicki Minaj, DJ Khaled, Eminem and more all have a singing on the hooks. Just think back to when we had music like Wu Tang Clan with strictly spitting and no singing. I guess this is growth but I still think that there should be a better balance.

By looking at whats hot on the charts where do you see hip hop going from here? Will every rapper have to make R&B music in order to be succeesful.

Lil Wayne EP hitting you real soon

2010 is carving itself out to be the year of the anticipated rap album. From Drake to Eminem to Rick Ross to Nicki Minaj, fans get just enough time to feast on a new LP before salivation is induced by another superstar’s release.

Lil Wayne’s Carter IV is in heavy contention with Kanye West’s Good Ass Job for most anticipated. The bad news: Weezy fans have to wait until the enigmatic rap star’s November prison release to experience the Carter series’ fourth installment. The good news: “I’m putting out a [Wayne] album called I’m Not A Human Being and I’ll probably drop it on his birthday, September 27,” says Cortez Bryant, Lil Wayne’s co-manager and Young Money CEO.

According to Bryant, the album will be an EP of all new Wayne material to serve as the Carter IV prelude. Fans are also warned not to expect any marketing and promotion bells and whistles.

“We not about to roll out no three month set up,” says Bryant. “I’m not even putting it out in stores. We just gonna put it out virally and maybe package it up for Christmas. Give 'em a hard copy later for fan appreciation.”

For Weezy fanatics, looks like Christmas is coming early this year. —Bonsu Thompson

Tech: Twitter lauches @earlybird a new shopping experience

(CNN) -- Twitter intends to offer special deals and discounts to its users, the company revealed this week. Is this a smart move for the social messaging site, or just an attempt to leap aboard the "online deals" bandwagon?

Twitter's first venture into online shopping is simple in its execution: The company has launched an account called @earlybird, which will Tweet special offers to its followers.

The Twitter community "can expect deals in fashion, tech, travel and entertainment," a representative said. The new account was first spotted by the blog ReadWriteWeb last week.

The online deals hype

There's no doubt that online deals sites are receiving massive interest, investment and hype: " 'We'll distribute great local deals to our audience' is the business model meme of the year," tweeted PayPal founder Max Levchin.

Investors have piled in on the trend. Market leader Groupon, which kicked off this year's "group buying" boom, has raised an astonishing $173 million in funding. LivingSocial, its nearest competitor, has raised nearly $50 million to fuel its growth in the high-stakes daily deals market.

New York City-based Yipit, another new entrant in the market, says that 110 Web-based companies now offer daily deals in the U.S. Clearly not all of these upstarts can survive: We can expect a shakeout next year as the market matures. Many of these young pretenders will flop; others will be acquired by the market leaders as they battle for territory in the local deals space.

Twitter deals: a tested model

However, while it would be easy to write off @earlybird as a classic case of bandwagon jumping, Twitter has proved itself to be a powerful force in the online deals market: Computer maker Dell says it generated $6.5 million in revenue in 2009 through its special Twitter deals.

Other companies, including Amazon, Woot and JetBlue, have experimented with the same model.

Yet another business model?

Critics might also accuse Twitter of a lack of focus in its pursuit of a business model.

The company makes money by licensing its "firehose" of updates to Google and Bing. A long-rumored ad platform, Promoted Tweets, is also rolling out, albeit much later than expected. Meanwhile, services for businesses were promised but have yet to be delivered.

Early bird deals add yet another tentacle to Twitter's convoluted business model -- a move that could indicate a lack of direction.

Win-win business model

And yet I feel that @earlybird could be a win for Twitter, its users and its advertisers. Not only does the service provide a powerful marketing platform through which offers will spread like wildfire (deals can be retweeted to your followers in a couple of clicks), but deals and savings are a rare exception to a familiar rule -- media consumers are averse to ads.

Twitter could have chosen to simply place paid tweets into streams without consulting users, but such a move would surely result in a backlash. Instead, @earlybird offers an enticing compromise: Users willingly opt into these "ads," hoping to score a great deal.

What if @earlybird fails? Even if the concept never gains traction, Twitter is unlikely to see much fallout. Setting up a new account and tweeting deals provided by advertisers take minimal effort on Twitter's part: With the possibility of big returns should the idea succeed, @earlybird is a no-brainer.

Lil Kim says she is still relevant

Lil Kim says that she is still relevant.

Although the rap world is focused on Nicki Minaj right now, Queen B insists she still has what it takes. "I’m constantly growing," Kim told Life Lounge, "my album came out in ’97 but I started doing music in the early ‘90s.

"One reason that I’m still here and I’m still relevant to this day - probably even more relevant than a lot of new people who come into the industry - is because I know how to reinvent myself, I know how to change with the times."

Lil Kim also spoke about how the music industry is a different world to when she first started out in the biz. "I think that, no matter who you are these days; you could be young, you could be old, you could be new, you could be an artist that’s been in the industry for a minute, I think it’s all about a hot record these days, it’s different.

"I think that’s the only difference I could point out, you know, you could have a hot song back in the day but it may not break through. But now if you have a hot song - it doesn’t have to have a lot of thought behind it, it doesn’t have to be a deep record," she added.

"You don’t even have to be very talented as long as you come up with something that’s catchy and, you know, something that is now."

This week Lil Kim revealed that she wants to collaborate with Rihanna. Source: OmgMusic.com

Cavs owner upset with Lebron James and writes a letter to fans

Cavaliers majority owner Dan Gilbert wrote an open letter to fans, and it wasn't too kind to LeBron.

"Dear Cleveland, All Of Northeast Ohio and Cleveland Cavaliers Supporters Wherever You May Be Tonight;

As you now know, our former hero, who grew up in the very region that he deserted this evening, is no longer a Cleveland Cavalier.

This was announced with a several day, narcissistic, self-promotional build-up culminating with a national TV special of his "decision" unlike anything ever "witnessed" in the history of sports and probably the history of entertainment.

Clearly, this is bitterly disappointing to all of us.

The good news is that the ownership team and the rest of the hard-working, loyal, and driven staff over here at your hometown Cavaliers have not betrayed you nor NEVER will betray you.

There is so much more to tell you about the events of the recent past and our more than exciting future. Over the next several days and weeks, we will be communicating much of that to you.

You simply don't deserve this kind of cowardly betrayal.

You have given so much and deserve so much more.

In the meantime, I want to make one statement to you tonight:

"I PERSONALLY GUARANTEE THAT THE CLEVELAND CAVALIERS WILL WIN AN NBA CHAMPIONSHIP BEFORE THE SELF-TITLED FORMER ‘KING’ WINS ONE"

You can take it to the bank.

If you thought we were motivated before tonight to bring the hardware to Cleveland, I can tell you that this shameful display of selfishness and betrayal by one of our very own has shifted our "motivation" to previously unknown and previously never experienced levels.

Some people think they should go to heaven but NOT have to die to get there.

Sorry, but that's simply not how it works.

This shocking act of disloyalty from our home grown "chosen one" sends the exact opposite lesson of what we would want our children to learn. And "who" we would want them to grow-up to become.

But the good news is that this heartless and callous action can only serve as the antidote to the so-called "curse" on Cleveland, Ohio.

The self-declared former "King" will be taking the "curse" with him down south. And until he does "right" by Cleveland and Ohio, James (and the town where he plays) will unfortunately own this dreaded spell and bad karma.

Just watch.

Sleep well, Cleveland.

Tomorrow is a new and much brighter day....

I PROMISE you that our energy, focus, capital, knowledge and experience will be directed at one thing and one thing only:

DELIVERING YOU the championship you have long deserved and is long overdue...."

Nicki Minaj loves the color in her wigs

Nicki Minaj is talking about her trademark wigs that made her famous.

The Harajuku Barbie who's been photographed wearing pink, green, blue and purple hair is dishing details on her signature mane.

As previously reported Lil Kim wasn't too keen on Minaj emulating her extensive wig collection and threw off the faux hair at a concert stating that she was “above this.”

Nicki however has since continued with the colorful hair trend and in an interview with HypeHair she speaks on the multi-colored locks that are making her famous.

She offers advice to readers of HH and suggests that ladies buy human hair wigs. She also adds that her colorful mane, the green bob especially, maker her happy.

“Go for a human hair wig in jet black with a blunt cut China bag...I like the green bob. Everyone seems to like that. People are saying it's the winner right now...I decided to choose a new look. Color makes me happy. It really excites me. I am a very visual person and when I look in the mirror, and I see green or I see pink, it does something to my attitude. It makes me feel positive."

Is Jaleel white smacking up his baby moms

Jaleel White will be forever known for his role as the goofy, suspender wearing geek, Urkel from the sitcom 'Family Matters'. Acting gigs don't come to frequently when ur typecast which is probably why we haven't seen him much lately. So it's pretty sad to hear that White is being investigated for beating up his baby's mama, Bridget Hardy. TMZ is reporting that the victim alleges White punched her in one of her breast implants while driving two weeks ago with a baby in the car. Then when they got home, White allegedly slapped her and pushed her into a toilet so hard that it broke. However, Hardy waited until this past Tuesday (July 6) to report the attack. Jaleel's rep told TMZ, "There was absolutely no battery ... no abuse ... and the incident never happened. This is just a ploy in an ongoing custody battle over their young daughter to tarnish his name." According to the report, LAPD is still investigating the incident.

Lebron James will announce his team decision Thursday at 9pm 1 hour special

ESPN Reports:
LeBron James is planning to announce the team with which he will sign during a one-hour special on ESPN Thursday night, ESPN The Magazine's Chris Broussard has learned through independent sources.

ESPN would only confirm that active discussions for the special are ongoing. But sources tell Broussard that representatives for James contacted the network, proposing that James makes his announcement during a 9 p.m. ET special.

Those sources said that James' representatives requested they be allowed to sell sponsorship for the one-hour special, with the proceeds going to the Boys and Girls Clubs of America, and that ESPN agreed to the proposal but had not been told what James has decided.

The NBA's most prized free agent opened a Twitter account on Tuesday and posted his first message on the social networking site. While he provided no information about his future plans, at least he offered something as the NBA awaits the decision on where he'll play next.

"Hello World, the Real King James is in the Building," said the tweet on the kingjames feed, which by 9 p.m. ET had more than 167,000 followers.

James' publicist, Keith Estabrook, confirmed the superstar's entrance to Twitter, a place where fellow prized free agents Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh often post details about their public lives off the floor.

James' plans still are a closely guarded secret. He visited with six teams -- the New Jersey Nets, New York Knicks, Miami Heat, Los Angeles Clippers, Cleveland Cavaliers and Chicago Bulls -- last week at his business offices in downtown Cleveland.

Early Wednesday, it appeared that if James were to play next season with Wade and Bosh, he'd do it in Miami: Bosh has decided to join Wade with the Heat, a source with knowledge of the situation told Broussard. An announcement was expected later in the day.

ESPN's Shelley Smith also reported that Bosh would join Wade in Miami.

It was not immediately clear whether Bosh would sign with Miami outright or join the Heat through a sign-and-trade deal. Bosh could earn $125 million over six years via sign-and-trade, but only $96 million over five without it.

If Bosh joins a team without doing a sign-and-trade, he will be able to sign only a five-year deal worth $96 million. He is determined not to leave that $29 million on the table, sources told Broussard.

"Either way, he's definitely going to Miami," the source said.

There had been various reports that the Toronto Raptors were working on a sign-and-trade deal with Cleveland for Bosh, and that James tried to convince him to join the Cavaliers. Both James and Bosh were aware that such a trade was possible, and James tried to recruit Bosh to the Cavaliers several times in the past few weeks, sources told Broussard.

But Bosh wanted to play with James in Cleveland, Chicago or Miami, and told the Raptors he'd accept sign-and-trades to those cities, sources told Broussard.

Unsure of James' decision, the Nets have a Plan B in case he rejects their offer.

The agent for Knicks forward David Lee says the Nets have talked to him several times since free agency began on Thursday.

An official within the league who is very close to the Nets' management team said the team would also consider going after Utah Jazz forward Carlos Boozer if James rejected the offer that was presented by new owner Mikhail Prokhorov and a team that included hip-hop mogul Jay-Z.

Nets president and general manager Rod Thorn said in a text message on Tuesday that there was nothing to report on the free-agency front.

Asked about the Nets' options if The King nixes their overtures, Thorn wrote:

"We will look at other options if we don't get one of the top guys."

While James is the star attraction in this summer's stacked class of free agents, other players have either stayed home or found a new one. On Monday, Amare Stoudemire agreed to a five-year deal with the Knicks and said he would continue to recruit James to join him.

Sports: Jamarcus Russell accused of illegal codeine possession

Former Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell was arrested at his home in Mobile, Ala., on Monday afternoon and charged with possession of codeine syrup - a controlled substance.

Mobile County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Lori Myles told the Mobile Press-Register that Russell was arrested during an undercover investigation. Police did not find a prescription for the codeine during their search. Although other people were on the property, Russell was the only one arrested.

He was booked into Mobile Metro Jail at 4:22 p.m. and released minutes later after making $2,500 bail. Russell is scheduled to appear in court July 20.

The Raiders released Russell, 24, in May after the No. 1 overall draft pick in 2007 posted a record of 7-18 as a starting quarterback. The quarterback's weight issues were well documented, teammates openly questioned his work ethic, and there were also constant whispers of Russell's use of codeine syrup.

Codeine syrup is sometimes used in a recreational drink known as "purple drank," "lean" or "sizzurp" as a means of enhancing the effects of alcohol. A popular drink in the South, it is a mix of prescription-strength cough syrup that contains the narcotic codeine and the antihistamine promethazine, with alcohol or 7-Up and Jolly Ranchers candy.

The Raiders had no comment, and neither Russell nor his agents could be reached for comment. Several former Oakland teammates had no comment, but one said, "It's not a big surprise; everyone knew he liked to party and chill."

Houston rapper Al D explained the effects of using codeine syrup in a recreational drink to the Houston Chronicle in 2007, saying, "When I was drinking 'drank,' I wasn't thinking about what it could be doing to my health. I'm 180 pounds, and when I was on drank, I was 240. It got so much sugar in it that it blows you up, and it makes you eat a lot, and then you got the soda."

The Raiders paid Russell more than $39 million during his three years with the team. They are seeking a return of $9.55 million on the basis that the money was paid as an advance against future years of his contract.

The Raiders cut Russell after trading for Washington quarterback Jason Campbell, but his release came only after they risked losing another big chunk of change by having Russell attend a minicamp. If he had gotten hurt, he would have collected an additional $6.45 million.

Oakland cut him the following week, saving that $6.45 million, but is still on the hook for $3 million guaranteed for this season.

Russell completed 52.1 percent of his passes (354 of 680) with the Raiders for 4,083 yards, with 18 touchdowns and 23 interceptions in 31 games. He lost 15 of his 25 fumbles, was sacked 70 times and had a passer rating of 65.2.

The Jets were said to have a slim interest in signing him last week, but told the New York Daily News on Monday that they will pass.
