Nicki Minaj Covers Complex Magazine: ‘Labels Think They Can Recreate This. They Can’t’

It’s absolutely clear that Nicki Minaj knows what she wants for herself and her career and she’s going to get it by any means necessary. Though she’s been through numerous shifts in managements, she’s always been the primary driver of the ‘Pink Friday’ vehicle which has launched her into international super stardom.

This month, she’s featured as one of Complex magazine’s various cover stories for their 10th Anniversary issue and she’s interviewed by Miss Info, [a very fitting choice, since Miss Info has been riding with Nicki since the days she was rocking with Deb Atney as a manager. ]. Inside, the two ladies get into a deep discussion about branding, artists being puppets and whether record labels could create another rap brand like hers.

Peep the excerpts from this interesting interview below:

When you’re constantly exceeding your own expectations, how do you set new goals?
Doing the Super Bowl with Madonna doesn’t really change Nicki Minaj’s personal goals. My goal right now is still to put out Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, sell five million copies eventually, and tour every country in the world. That’s what I’ve been working toward. So while the world is talking about, “Oh my God, I can’t believe Nicki Minaj was at the Super Bowl!” I’m mixing and mastering my music. In my scheme of things it’s way bigger.

Because those surprises can’t replace the things you want to achieve by yourself?
Because my goal the whole time has been for people to see me as a stand-alone artist. I came out with Young Money, the biggest hip-hop label in the world at that time. And then it was, “How do I branch away from Lil Wayne?” One of my biggest records was with Drake, “Moment 4 Life.” Even with the Super Bowl, it’s Madonna’s moment. I’m just sharing in that moment. It’s not Nicki Minaj’s moment. Nicki Minaj at the Grammys—that’s my moment. I’ve just been constantly on this quest to stand alone.

Yikes. That’s a level of personal drive that nobody can ask for. At this point in your career, I’m sure you can call certain shots that you couldn’t before.
In the beginning people thought they knew who I was but they didn’t. They tried to create something. Whenever I’m being me, the people love it. They connect with it. But whenever I find myself in a situation—prime example, during a photo shoot, if a photographer is telling me every little thing to do, I shut down. And you might as well kiss the photo shoot goodbye. I’m an artist in every motherf-cking sense of the word. I work well with people who trust my instinct and understand that I am the marketer and promoter of the Nicki Minaj brand. This did not come overnight. This did not happen from a record company. No manager created this.

I always got a kick out of the endless debates over who was managing you. I’ve known you through three sets of managers [Deb Antney, Puffy and James Cruz, and Hip Hop Since 1978] and in every case, it was always clear that…
Little do they know, I manage myself.

Some artists feel more comfortable being puppets.
Right! Because if you’re telling me you just want to be an artist, you’re telling me that you do not want control over a brand you’re creating. You don’t want any say in a brand that you’re creating? I can’t. I can’t rock with that theory.
Did you always know what you wanted your brand to be?
I didn’t know who I was as an artist. I knew who I was as a person. My morals and everything, they’re still the same. And then I took it upon myself to create this artist, Nicki Minaj. I wanted to do what a label cannot do. Now, labels are going to think they can re-create this. [Laughs.] But they can’t.

They’re definitely trying. It’s the Nicki Effect. Since the success of Pink Friday you must see that the industry has changed. Corporations see a female rapper who has more visibility and more income streams than her male counterparts. So new female artists are viable, and that creates a more competitive atmosphere.
When I first got in, doing freestyles and mixtapes, I did a song called “Still I Rise.” I was talking about how so many women were pulling me down and ripping me apart. I said, “Every time a door opens for me/That means you just got a better opportunity to do you/Better understand these labels look at numbers and statistics/If I win, you win, it’s just logistics.”

So in order for my theory to be proven right, I have to open doors for women. The up-and-coming females who wanted to get in—when you guys are coming out and dissing me, and all that negativity….They saw me as a threat instead of seeing me as “she’s going to open the door for us.” I never came into what I’m doing dissing anyone. I gave everyone their props and it’s unfortunate that people felt intimidated and attacked me. Then it became a ripple effect. But now it’s all love. My music is a way for me to have fun. Sometimes I’ll say things and I’ll laugh. But it’s all love. I’m in a great place and I just wish everybody the best.

DMX dissed Drake but he co signs J. Cole

While platinum-selling rapper Drake may not be at the top of his list of favorite hip-hop artists, one-time Ruff Ryders leader, DMX, has issued a co-sign to Roc Nation protege- J. Cole.

'X' credits a spontaneous incident in his car for his introduction in to Cole's world.

"I tell you when it was [when I was ready to co-sign him.] I don't listen to the radio, I listened to the radio one time in the car, I'm driving, and I heard a [J. Cole] song and I was like, 'Wow -- d*mn, he's saying something,'" DMX said referring to getting familiar with J. Cole's music. "I appreciate his lyrical content and then I found out who it was. So that's why [I co-sign him.]" (Jon John TV)

Young Money Rapper Tyga tour bus gets shot up

Tyga recently had a confrontation with some haters during his performance on Monday night at the Sokol Auditorium in Omaha, Nebraska. For some reason, unknown individuals started throwing various items on stage at Tyga while he was performing. The Young Money rapper became infuriated and screamed into the mic at his assailants, "I'm going to do this one more performance for my fans, then I'll see you outside."

Before Tyga could finish his last song Rack City, more items were being thrown between members of his crew and the haters in the crowd, which resulted in a fist fight erupting. After the confrontation turned physical, the unidentified group of aggressive haters took Tyga's "I'll see you outside" warning seriously. While Tyga and his team began to board their tour bus, massive gun fire exploded in the direction of their vehicle.

Apparently, the shots came from a car nearby, and bullets continued to spray and clash against the tour bus even as it sped off for a few blocks. According to reports, two people suffered minor wounds from the gun shots. Tyga's female artist Honey Cocaine was struck in the arm, but she is expected to fully recover. She later tweeted about her experience being shot.

No arrests have been made, and it is unclear if the police even have any suspects at this time.

Jay Z ready to help Beyonce make a comeback?

Is it too soon for Beyonce to get back to work? According to the NY Post, Jay-Z is already working on putting together a massive comeback world tour for Beyonce just months after given birth to Baby Blue Ivy. Sources say that a few weeks after the baby was born, Jay-z approached his buddies at Live Nation to propose a $150 million deal for the mega star to go on tour later this year. Beyonce is currently in a joint management deal with Jay-z’s Roc Nation as well as Live Nation after she split with her father/manager early last year.

Whether the tour will actually happen is still up in the air with Live Nation allegedly making a lower counter offer, but until that moment arrives, Beyonce is returning to the stage in just a few months. Just in time to kick the summer off right, she’s performing three exclusive shows during Memorial Day Weekend live on stage at the Revel Resort in Atlantic City.

Tickets go on sale April 6th for dates May 25th, May 26th and May 27th.

Yo Gotti announces nationwide tour

In May 2012, Memphis rap mogul Yo Gotti will set off on his national Road To Riches Tour, which is already confirmed in nearly 30 cities, with more to be announced. Yo Gotti will kick off the tour on May 3 in Atlanta, followed by a special appearance with Pitbull at the historic Beale Street Music Festival in Memphis on May 5.

Also on the tour is Zed Zilla, who is the first signee to Yo Gotti's CMG imprint. The young Memphis rapper has been consistently selling out shows since his Rent's Due mixtape dropped in October 2011, and his follow up project, Rent's Due: Late Notice hosted by DJ Drama, is slated for release prior to the tour.

In recent months, Yo Gotti's ardent fan base has grown by leaps and bounds, particularly online, with over 1.3 million followers on Facebook and nearly 400,000 on Twitter, growing rapidly. Without question, interacting with his loyal fans is foremost on Gotti's agenda.

Last week, Yo Gotti found the perfect way to bring the internet and streets together, as he ventured to SxSW 2012 in Austin, Texas to headline the 'Bout That Life show, sponsored by Dirty Glove B******, Live Mixtapes, 8732 Clothing and MTV2 Sucker Free. Gotti also surprised fans with several unannounced appearances, including an impromptu performance at the BET stage with Machine Gun Kelly, and another with Meek Mill at The Warner Sound stage.

On his upcoming tour, Gotti promises more personal outreach with his fans. Music lovers will be able to see him in world-renowned venues like New York's SOB's, Toad's Place in Connecticut, Key Club in Los Angeles, and House of Blues in Ohio, New Orleans and Dallas.

"For Road To Riches, we wanted to do venues in more intimate settings, more up close and personal with the fans," Yo Gotti explains. "We'll be bringing out guests throughout, so people can expect lots of surprises. I don't measure my success by the internet or by charts, I measure it by how I see people reacting in real life."

There are truly no days off with Yo Gotti, as he has spent every waking hour in the new year filming videos for songs like "Colors" and "I Got That Sack" from his acclaimed January 10 mixtape; and recording songs for his highly anticipated CM7 mixtape.

"We have a lot of big records already, some good features," says Yo Gotti. "I'm working on the mixtape and a new album at the same time. The sound is just getting bigger and bigger as far as the production and quality."

With the initial announcement of the Road To Riches Tour dates on Yo Gotti's official website YoGottiMusic.com, some fans have already expressed dismay at not seeing their city on the itinerary.

"I want to hit every city for the fans, of course," he assures, "but you have to start somewhere and you have to end somewhere. But who knows? We may do a second leg if circumstances allow."

NICKI MINAJ WILL WALK AWAY WITH MILLIONS AS FACE OF NEW PEPSI BEVERAGE

According to Forbes, Nicki Minaj and Lil Wayne has just inked multi-million dollar deals with Pepsi during the 2012 SXSW last week. YMCMB will be apart of a huge maketing campaign for a new Pepsi beverage realeasing in the next few months. Nicki Minaj became the first female to grace FORBES’ Hip-Hop Cash Kings last year, pulling in $6.5 million.

According to Derek Jackson, the Glu agency chief who brokered the agreement, Minaj will become the face of a new Pepsi beverage nearing its debut. He said the pact, which includes a commercial filmed in South America last month (pixely footage has already leaked on YouTube), is a multimillion-dollar deal.

“You’ll see the commercial probably in the next two months,” Jackson told me before Lil Wayne’s performance at South By Southwest. “That’ll be a segue into a new beverage Pepsi has, called ‘Pop,’ and she’ll be the face of the brand … it’s going to be explosive.”
The pact was one of two major partnerships between Pepsi and Cash Money / Young Money artists garnering significant attention in Austin. Lil Wayne debuted his DEWeezy campaign with Pepsi’s Mountain Dew, also negotiated by Jackson, at his South By Southwest showcase.

Good look for YMCMB with the exception of Drake, who remains on his lucrative deal with Coca-Cola’s Sprite.

Cash Money records being sued by EMI

Music giant EMI says Cash Money Records, the label that is home to rappers like Lil Wayne, Drake, and Nicki Minaj, owes nearly half a million dollars in royalty payments from a settlement agreement. In November 2009, EMI filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against Cash Money in federal court in Manhattan. The licensing dispute resulted in a settlement agreement where Cash Money said it would pay royalties for the EMI songs Cash Money's artists sampled on their own albums. But EMI says it had to sue again because Cash Money stopped making its quarterly royalty payments. (Courthouse News Service)

A$AP Rocky Slams XXL Freshman Class - SXSW

A$AP Rocky's debut album is highly anticipated. Lots of rumors have been floating around about it's title and release date. Fuse TV caught up with the Harlem rapper and got the real deal.

"The name of my album is 'Long Live A$AP," he revealed. "My album comes out in July."

Another rumor A$AP cleared up had to do with the 2012 XXL Freshman Class cover. He clarified that he made the list, but wasn't on the cover because his schedule didn't permit him the time to shoot it. Without naming names he also trashed the list.

"Personally I'mma speak my mind. I think a lot of the motherf*ckers on the list is corny as f*ck," A$AP said. "But shout outs to Danny Brown. I think a few people on there are eligible for it."

Let's take a look at that list one more time:

Machine Gun Kelly, Danny Brown, Kid Ink, Future, Roscoe Dash, Hopsin, Macklemore, French Montana, Iggy Azalea and Don Trip.

After scratching off Danny Brown that leaves us with 9 possible targets. Who do you think A$AP is firing shots at?

Drake Nabs GQ's Style Issue Cover: Talks Relationship With His Dad, Dealing With Fame & His Sex Life

By all accounts Drake has made it. Whether you like his music or not it's hard not to respect his climb from child actor to rap superstar. GQ's Claire Hoffman caught up with Drizzy for the April issue of the magazine to talk about his life and rise to the top.

On His relationship with his father:

Me and my dad are friends. We're cool. I'll never be disappointed again, because I don't expect anything anymore from him. I just let him exist, and that's how we get along. We laugh. We have drinks together. But I spent too many nights looking by the window, seeing if the car was going to pull up. And the car never came.

On today's rap game:

Rap now is just being young and fly and having your sh*t together. The mood of rap has changed. Some of my favorite rappers, some of my heroes — DJ Screw, Aaliyah— there might be like 200 pictures of them because there was no Internet. Whereas with us, it's like every moment is documented.

On adjusting to fame in his personal life:

I’m trying to find the same feelings that I had for women when I had very little going on, which is tough. When I was in my mom’s house, I had nowhere to go, no real obligations. My girlfriend at the time, if she was mad at me, my day was all f*cked-up. I didn’t have anything else. And that made for some of the best music, I think, to date. Records where I felt small. That feeling is hard to capture when you’re sitting out here in a space like this. It’s really difficult for me to find something that makes me feel small.

On his sex life:

There’s just a time where it was like, just getting p*ssy. Where I was in that sort of ‘I’m young, I’m going to disconnect from my emotions and just do what everyone else tells me I should do and just be a rapper and have my fun.’ And for me as a person, it just doesn’t work. I just need something else. The seconds after a man reaches climax, that’s like the realest moment of your life. If I don’t want you next to me in that fifteen, twenty seconds, then there’s something wrong.
